What Is the Dominion Energy EV Charger Rewards Program?

The Dominion Energy EV Charger Rewards program incentivizes qualifying owners of certain Level 2 EV smart charging stations in Virginia to allow their chargers to be leveraged during times of peak electric demand. This includes slowing or pausing charging during periods of high electric demand to reduce strain on the electric grid, thus avoiding expensive repairs or upgrades to the grid, and helping create a more reliable grid for all of Dominion Energy’s customers. In return, program participants will receive $40 after participating in the program for one year, every year they are enrolled along with a $125 rebate if they apply to the program within 120 days of purchasing a level 2 charger.

How Does the Program Work?

Enrolling in the program allows Dominion Energy to slow or pause your level 2 EV charger during brief periods of high electric demand. The purpose of this is to reduce total electrical strain on the grid during these periods. According to Dominion Energy, these events can occur for up to four hours, no more than 45 times per year (15 times per month). These adjustments occur remotely, with Dominion Energy controlling your charger via the internet. Due to the relative infrequency of these events and short time frames, participating in this program will generally not impact the ability of your EV to get the charge it needs every day.

Dominion Energy says that depending on your charger, you will be notified before, or at the start of an energy event. For example, ChargePoint will notify you through text message and in its app 24 hours before an event is scheduled. So far, ChargePoint is the only EV charger manufacturer that will notify you of an event ahead of time. However, all other eligible EV charger manufacturers will still let you know when an event is occurring. For example, Enel-X may display  “Smart Charge Event Underway” on the app or online account dashboard. During an event, if you would still like your charger to operate normally, you may opt out of an energy event through your EV charger’s app.

What Are the Benefits?

If you enroll in the program within 120 days of purchasing a qualifying level 2 EV charger, you will receive a $125 rebate. A maximum of two new chargers can receive this bonus. In addition, you will receive $40, in the form of an e-gift card on the anniversary of your enrollment, every year you are enrolled.
